Our Story
Gary and Maggie Scripps-Klenzing knew that purchasing the property at 301 West Main in Fredericksburg, Texas, would be a labor of love. The Altdorf Biergarten was a significant piece of Fredericksburg's history and had become part of the culture and identity of the community. The beautifully landscaped patio, complete with a running stream and giant shade sails covering teak furniture, was a perfect place for families to enjoy the delicious food and famous sangrias. Maggie's two daughters, Peggy and Liz, played a vital role in the operation of both Altdorf Biergarten and Crossroads Saloon & Steakhouse. The enormous painted mural of the Texas Hill Country, painted by Lee and Matt Casbeer, had become a popular backdrop for family photos.
Maggie was born and raised in West Texas and has always had her hand in the restaurant industry. The restoration of the building took a lot of time, but Maggie was determined to keep as much of the original building as possible. The Altdorf Biergarten was recognized by the Historic Review Board Awards for its meticulous attention to detail and extensive restoration, including the discovery of a stone-lined hand dug well, which was uncovered during demolition.
Maggie kept a lot of the original menu while infusing some of her own signature dishes. Both restaurants were a success due to the involvement and passion of the entire team. Every employee was eager and willing to help ensure that guests' experiences were memorable. Gary and Maggie believe in giving back to their community and have been acknowledged as great philanthropists.
